Data message contains information indicating operating mode of transmitter module (14,16,18) associated with vehicles tires. A control unit (84) adjusts the value of a counter linked to data for operating mode of the data message. The module has at least two operating modes. The control unit adjusts the counter value to different first or second values when operating mode data indicates the emitter module is in first or second of two operating modes. The first value is greater than zero and the second value is zero. The tire pressure monitor (12) includes a receiver (62) which receives data messages containing information indicating pneumatic conditions of a vehicle tires (20,22,24) and a control unit (64) connected to the receiver. The control unit reacts to the data message input to the receiver. The control unit includes a counter having a value indicating the duration of an abnormal pneumatic condition of the vehicle. The control unit adjusts the value of the counter as a function of the contents of the data message input to the receiver.
