Method supplies instantaneous vehicle position and data relating to the route to be followed to a controller (21) for engine and gears. The controller calculates ideal values for engine and gear ratio taking into account the navigational or IPS (intelligent predicative system) data and uses it to optimize driving behavior to save fuel or drive safely around schools etc. The controller (21) has an IPS block (20) in which data is processed with the resulting IPS predictions (50) used in gear train management (60) to generate gear change commands towards a selected driving behavior. Under certain driving conditions certain gear-changes can be prevented.
