Simultaneous voice and data transmission method, for mobile phone system, using half-rate voice signal transmission to allow inclusion of packet data

Voice signals are transmitted according to a half-rate protocol and data signals are transmitted, simultaneously. Data transmission is preferably in packet mode, and ocupies the remaining capacity made available by the half-rate speech transmission. A buffer memory is preferably used to store data packets prior to their transmission. A class C mobile phone has a half rate voice coder to allow simultaneous transmission of voice and data signals as in a Class A mobile by interlacing of the voice (M0-M7, P0-P7) and data (D0-D7,E0-E7) word bits after filtering of the voice signal to use a speech model. An Independent claim is included for a mobile phone with memory storing a program for speech transmission and a program for data transmission.
