PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide adaptive maximum likelihood detection. ;SOLUTION: In the adapter and the method for adapting a programmable digital maximum likelihood detector to variable channel output and the correction system for correcting the programmable digital maximum likelihood detector from unknown data in the known code of the variable channel output, the maximum likelihood detector has a number of maximum likelihood states.
