PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the surface friction resistance of an ophthalmic medical appliance and a body fluid treatment medical appliance such as catheters introduced into a blood vessel or the like, a contact lens, an intraocular lens or the like at least partially constituted of a polymeric material or to make the surfaces of those medical appliances hydrophilic from an aspect of the enhancement of operability, anti-staining properties and bio-compatibility. PSOLUTION: The medical appliance having an excellent function is obtained by treating the surface of the medical appliance with fluorine gas, a mixed gas containing fluorine being at least one component and gas other than oxygen or a mixed gas containing at least fluorine and oxygen as components not only to reduce the friction resistance of the surface of the medical appliance but also to improve the antifouling properties, hydrophilicity or blood affinity thereof.
