PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for preventing and treating the initial state of atherosclerosis and its related disease in a mammal. PSOLUTION: This method involves administering an NADPH oxidase inhibitor such as apocynin. The NADPH oxidase inhibitor such as the apocynin inhibits p47[SBphox/SB] from translocating to an endothelial cell gp91[SBphox/SB] and a p22[SBphox/SB]- bonding NADPH oxidase component, and as a result, LDL is prevented from being accumulated in a space of a subendothelial layer caused by the high permeability of the endothelium.
