The present invention relates to a catalyst for decomposition of dinitrogen oxide at temperatures of 250 to 1000 degC, characterized in that the catalyst comprises 0.1 to 10 mole percent of Coi3-xMixOi4, wherein M denotes Fe or Al and x = 0.25 to 2, and up to 2 percent by weight of ZrOi2, on a cerium oxide support. The invention further relates to a method for performing a catalytic process during which undesired formation of dinitrogen oxide takes place wherein Ni2O containing gas is brought in contact with a catalyst comprising 0.1 to 10 mole percent of COi3-xMixOi4, where M denotes Fe or Al and x = 0.25 to 2, and up to 2 percent by weight of ZrOi2 on a cerium oxide support at temperatures ranging from 250 to 1000 degC.
