Animal carcass proccesing method, especially for turkeys, includes stunning step to render animals unconscious without interrupting oxygen supply to muscles

The animals are stunned prior to slaughter so that they become unconscious without the supply of oxygen to the muscles being cut off. A method for processing animal carcasses, especially poultry carcasses, in a slaughterhouse comprises the following steps : (a) supplying the animals to be slaughtered in containers (2) ; (b) stunning the animals whilst they are inside the containers, so that they become unconscious, but the supply of oxygen to the muscles is essentially maintained ; (c) unloading the animals from the containers ; and (d) slaughtering the animals. An Independent claim is also included for the processing line used to carry out this method, comprising a stunning device (8), a conveyor (2) for transporting the containers through the stunning device, an unloading device (20a-20c) and a slaughter station.
