Preparing a catalyst for the production of vinyl acetate by the reaction of ethylene, oxygen and acetic acid. This comprises impregnating a porous support, where the porous surfaces of contain a catalytically effective amount of pre-reduced palladium with a solution of potassium aurate which is reduces the potassium to a catalytically effective amount of metallic gold.
