A software rental system is provided comprising at least one rented program permitting at least one service to a customer with a customer's reponse means, whereinsaid rented program has no access to a customer's private keying material,using asymmetric cryptography, said customer's reponse means proves to the rented program, that said customer's reponse means has access to the customer's private keying material, andsaid rented program does not permit said at least one service to said customer unless the proof is successful.
