The invention relates to a vibration damper on the basis of electrorheological and/or magnetorheological fluids, comprising a cylinder housing and an axially movable piston which divides the cylinder housing into two chambers for a hydraulic medium and cooperates with a piston rod. The hydraulic medium chambers are filled with an electrorheological and/or magnetorheological fluid. At least one flow channel is provided for which connects these hydraulic fluid chambers. The electrorheological and/or magnetorheological fluid flowing through the at least one flow channel can be subjected to an electric and/or magnetic field. The vibration damper is improved by the fact that at least one additional bypass-channel (18, 29, 34, 57, 62, 72, 83, 84, 83', 84') which connects the hydraulic fluid chambers is provided for in the piston.
