A liquid-vapor mixture is separated in a separator (8) into two flows (6, 7) which are opposed horizontally and directing these flows (9a, 9b) to the lower part (4) of the column to reduce liquid entrainment into the top part (5) of the column. The mixture arrives in a radial feed pipe (3) and the separator (8) has a deflection box in the form of a T with an inlet and two symmetrical outlets. The inlet is connected to the feed pipe and the box is mounted so the flows from the outlets form the two horizontal opposed flows. The means of directing the flow downwards are two distribution horns in the form of the arc of a circle with an open upstream end and an open base, placed horizontally along the internal wall of the column. The two horns are placed symmetrically about a vertical plane passing through the axis of the feed pipe. The upstream end of each horn is connected to the means of separating the liquid-vapor mixture into two flows. Alternatively, the base of the horns is closed but has a number of openings along the internal wall of the column. A flow separator is placed inside the deflection box in the axis of the feed pipe to improve the separation of the mixture into two flows. The horns contain a number of deflectors mounted on their side walls so that each one deflects part of the flow towards the base of the horn to evenly distribute the flow inside the column. The deflectors are arranged so their output is inclined at an angle of less than 45 degrees to the vertical. The area through which the mixture flows towards the base of each horn is between 0.8 and 3 times the cross sectional area of the feed pipe.
