Continuous treatment of animal or plant waste (especially that requiring monitoring) comprises passing a suspension of the comminuted material in water together with a microorganism-immobilizing carrier in a cycle through an aerobic and then an anaerobic reactor with a portion being led over a solids separator and the separated-off solids and carrier being recycled and the liquid fraction being heat evaporated and the residue combusted.
