The holder has a threaded section (1) for screwing into the ground and a tubular holding section (2) with upwardly open socket (3) to hold the fence post. The holder is basically of plastics and enclosed by a metal sleeve (12) which fits on the holding section so that it encloses same at least in some sections. The threaded section and the holding section are preferably shaped so that the metal sleeve can be fitted onto the holder section over the threaded section.
