Use of autofluorescent proteins (I) in crop plants to protect against ultra-violet (UV)-B radiation (280-320 nm), is new. (I) are natural products of Cnidaria and are characterized by their color or fluorescence. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) incorporation of DNA (II) that encodes (I) into plants to protect against UV-B; (2) incorporation of (II) into plants for intracellular alteration of irradiated light; and (3) incorporation of (II) for characterization of transgenic plants.
