The operating temperature of the catalyst (24) is influenced by variations of the losses of the automatic transmission (10), e.g. friction losses and/or hydraulic losses. The transmission is a continuously variable transmission, with a V-belt etc. (12) for power transmission, and tension resp. contact pressure of the belt is altered for variation purposes. Belt tension is raised/lowered, to increase/lower losses. Variations in losses are dependent upon the temperature of the engine (14) and/or the catalyst.
