Method for contact free magnified imaging of a section of the endothelium or epithelium of the cornea of an eye (12) using a slit illumination arrangement (9) for the section of cornea to be imaged in conjunction with an electronic image transducer (4, 5). Method has the following steps: alignment of the imaging optics with the cell layer to be imaged; recording of a series of images of the eye during its uncontrolled movement; and selection of the best image in terms of resolution and contrast. The invention also relates to a corresponding device.
