Method for optical imaging of a small animal (3) in which the animal is injected with a contrast agent and illuminated with a number of LEDs. Luminescent radiation excited by the radiation is detected by a detector (27). The LEDs (D1-D12) have different emission wavelengths and can be used with different spectral filter combinations for selection of a particular excitation wavelength, while a detection filter (23) can be used to select an expected luminescence emission maximum. The invention also relates to a corresponding optical imaging device and a filter set with different spectral filter combinations.
