Re-expandable polystyrene (PS) production involves dissolving expanded PS waste in specified polar solvent(s) (I) and precipitating PS with a precipitant of lower polarity than (I) that also acts as blowing agent. Re-expandable polystyrene (PS) production involves dissolving expanded PS waste in solvent(s) (I) selected from di alkylene glycol dialkyl ethers and mono- or dicarboxylic acid alkyl esters with linear or branched 1-12 C alkyl(ene) and acid groups, tetrahydrofuran, ketones and mixtures with ethylene carbonate, propylene carbonate, cyclohexane and/or rape seed oil methyl ester; and precipitating PS with a precipitant of lower polarity than (I) that also acts as blowing agent.
