The controller has estimator (51) that calculates approximate level of an input signal. A subtracter calculates a difference between the estimated level and a predetermined reference value. The gain controller outputs a control value by non-linearly scaling the difference output and a modulator modulates the accumulated output to a pulse width modulated signal. An independent claim is also included for a method of outputting a gain control signal.
