The mechanism may move an ashtray out of a housing into a ready-for-use position. The mechanism includes a rack (4) with a straight portion (4a) engaging a circular pinion (5). One end of the rack is bent to one side (4b) and is shaped to engage a spiral pinion (6) which gives a decreasing linear speed of the rack for a constant rotational speed of the pinion. The rack is joggled so that it runs smoothly off the circular pinion onto the larger diameter end of the spiral. The pinion is stopped before it reaches the smallest part of the spiral.
