Lead substitute for radiation protection purposes in the energy range of a 60-125 kV x-ray tube, which contains tin (Sn), bismuth (Bi) and optionally tungsten (W) or their compounds, comprises (in wt.%) 10-20% matrix material, 50-75% Sn (compound) and 20-35% Bi (compound) for a nominal lead equivalent up to 0.15 mm and 40-60% Sn (compound), 15-30% Bi (compound) and 0-30% W (compound) for a nominal lead equivalent of 0.15-0.60 mm.
