A control unit (4) computes a target clutch exciting current for the closed-loop control of an electromagnetic clutch (2). The electromagnetic clutch transmits or interrupts power from the output shaft of an engine (1) to the input shaft of the synchromesh type automatic transmission (3). The target clutch exciting current is calculated by adding the predetermined increase amount in the clutch exciting current to the last target clutch exciting current of a feedback control during every clutch connection processing period. A transmission input shaft rotation sensor (14) detects the input shaft rotational speed of the synchromesh type automatic transmission during engine stall determination to determine if the input shaft rotation speed is below a predetermined value.
