The fitting for a pipe with a plastic outer layer comprises a connector (20) which fits on the end of the pipe and a locking sleeve (22) which surrounds the connector with a radial gap. The end (40) of this furthest from the fitting presses against the pipe end and tapers inwards. A union nut (18) fits over the connector and sleeve and there is a cylindrical gap (48) between the inner surface of the nut and the end of the connector.
