The surgical instrument (10) has two pieces (12,14), hinged together at the center. The clamping jaws (15,18) have finely serrated gripping surfaces (20,22). The other ends of the pieces have loop handles (24,26). The locking assembly (28) has locking elements (30,32) extending inward from each loop handle, with sawtoothed or hooked interengaging teeth (38). There is a flexure (34,35) at the root of one of the locking elements to enable the element to be deflected for unlocking.
