Protection element comprises a first section (12) or sensor tube for containing the sensor and a second threaded section (18) for attachment of the protection element (10). The second section has a core (28) of low value material and high mechanical strength with an outer high value corrosion resistant coating (22) that forms a gas tight seal with the first section and is a press fit on the core for transfer of mechanical forces. Typical high value corrosion resistant materials are tantalum or platinum.
