A flame retardant resin composition, comprises: (A) 100 pts.wt. thermoplastic resin; (B) 0.01-5 pts. wt. fluororesin in fibril form; and (C) 0.1-30 pts. wt. flame retardant. (A) and (C) are mixed and the product, on examination of surface formed by breakage of a test piece of resin composition by raster electron microscopy in a fixed area of 7 x 7mu , shows dispersed fibrils of at most 0.5mu diameter. The fibrils have at least one configuration having a network with one or more crossing points on at least two fibrils and a configuration with one or more branch points, with at least 5 branch or crossing points in the 7 x 7mu area. Also claimed is the preparation of the above composition by melting and kneading 10-100 pts. wt. (A) and 0-30 pts.wt. (C), adding 0.01-5 pts.wt. (B) in the form of an aqueous dispersion of particle size 0.05-0.5mu and solids content 10-70 wt.% and melt-kneading, whereby, when the ratio of (A)/(C) = 100/0.1-30 is not achieved, at least one component from (A) and (C) which will form (B), is added.
