A transparent building element, in particular made of glass, takes for example the shape of a glass pane (39, 40, 41) arranged on or in a closure element provided in or on a building, for example a door (32), a window (33) or an upper light inlet (42). In order to appropriately and economically deflect light, at least one outer or inner surface, in particular a main surface (6) of the transparent building element, has a ribbed structure composed of individual, parallel ribs (11) integrally formed with the building element (36) and having a triangular cross-section. At least one first group of these triangular side surfaces (12) formed on the ribs (11) is oriented in such a way that together they form a refraction or reflection surface for appropriately deflecting at least one partial range of the light (44) passing through the transparent building element.
