The system to assist drivers uses a radio receiver, a radio transmitter, radar, audible and visual warning devices. These communicate with a roadside signaling infrastructure emitting different radio signals for different traffic information. A computer controls the vehicle when the driver response it is not sufficiently prompt when a hazard is communicated. The speed of the vehicle may be reduced by engine control or automatic braking if the driver's response is not prompt enough.
