Fractionation trays (2) have perforations formed across decking sections (5) which are devoid of flow-down guides (12). A low surface area structured grid packing layer (3) supported on the bottom tray, extends upwards towards upper tray for a distance equal to 1/10-3/4 of vertical distance between the trays. The packing has bent blades (8) which have inclined surface. The fractionation trays are evenly spaced apart and are arranged in a vertical column. The packing layer has a low surface area. An Independent claim is also included for fractional distillation apparatus.
