The pedal assembly, comprising a spindle (8) with cranks (10) and at least one chainwheel (16) connected to one wheel, especially the rear wheel of the bicycle, has a driving pinion (18) fixed to the spindle, a driven pinion (28) to turn the chain wheels, and a transmission system connecting the two pinions. The transmission system consists of two coaxial intermediate pinions (20, 22), one meshing with the driving pinion and the other with the driven one. Variants of the design can have driving and driven pinions in different configurations.
