Method has the following steps: (1) Periodic capture of a signal, generated by a sole sensor, that is representative of the vibration energy in the gearbox, for each gear ratio (2) calculation and recording of a representative value for this vibration energy (3) comparison, for each ratio, of a value representative of the overall vibration energy recorded in the previous step with a threshold value. The invention also relates to a corresponding device that enables the rate of increase of vibration in an engine gearbox to me measured and monitored.
