Method for detecting the use of chemical fertilizers in the certification of organic farming products involves analyzing known organic and non-organic products to determine their nitrogen and carbon and/or oxygen contents and isotopic ratios, creating a database from the results, determining the most discriminating combinations of data in the database by statistical treatment, determining corresponding data for a target product and comparing these data with the database. An Independent claim is also included for a device comprising a database as above and statistical means for determining the most discriminating combinations of data and for comparing the data for a target product with the database.
