PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an inexpensive proton conductive polyelectrolyte exhibiting high proton conductivity even in a low hydrous state maintaining sufficient strength. PSOLUTION: The proton conductive polyelectrolyte is produced by polymerizing a compound containing at least 1 arylcyclobutene structures in the molecule and has at least 1 ionic dissociable group in the molecule of the polymer. Furthermore, a method for producing a proton conductive polyelectrolyte membrane characterized as follows is included. The proton conductive polyelectrolyte is dissolved in an organic solvent to provide a solution, which is then applied to form a membrane. The solvent is removed to prepare the membrane.
