PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a protective mechanism for a magnetic disk which enhances the resistance of the magnetic disk to impacts by retreating a magnetic head according to the state of a magnetic disk unit and which meticulously sets the conditions for retreat of the magnetic head, and is effective and highly practicable.;SOLUTION: The protective mechanism is provided with a sensor 20 and sensor driver 31 which acquire information relating to a change in the environment for the magnetic disk unit 10, a shock manager 32 which analyzes the information acquired by the sensor driver 31 together with the history thereof and carries out impact prediction by judging the state in which the magnetic disk unit 10 is placed and an HDD filter driver 33 which controls the operation of the magnetic disk unit 10 including the retreat of the magnetic head on the basis of the result of the prediction by the shock manager. Further, the mechanism can also be provided with a diagnostic processing section for investigating whether the retreat of the magnetic head can be completed or not prior to the occurrence of the impact and for diagnosing whether there is a possibility of the occurrence of trouble in the magnetic disk or not.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
