PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a silicon-silicon carbide matrix composite reinforced with fibers having improved oxidation resistance at high temperature in a dry/wet condition. SOLUTION: A method for increasing the toughness of a silicon-silicon carbide matrix composite reinforced with a fibrous material comprises selecting a preform comprising a fibrous material such as filaments, cloth or felt each coated with silicon-doped boron nitride film and a matrix comprising particles selected from those of carbon, silicon carbide and mixtures thereof, and infiltering the preform with molten silicon to make the objective silicon-silicon carbide matrix composite reinforced with the fibrous material.
