PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make intuitively graspable the contents of a document obtained by retrieval and to make selectable a desired document with good efficiency. ;SOLUTION: A display image database 10 stores information regarding a background image having a plurality of image elements corresponding to a word or phrase which is possibly contained within a document. A document retrieval processing part 4 retrieves a document having a specified character string from a database 9 storing a plurality of documents. A display image area information generation processing part 3 generates symbol information for allotting a symbol corresponding to the document obtained by the retrieval to a proper position associated with an image element on the background image.
