A coated substrate giving a metallic surface impression is described which is obtained from a process in which ;(a) at least one base varnish layer is applied to the surface of the substrate, ;(b) the at least one base varnish layer is dried thoroughly following its application, ;(c) a corrodible optical layer is applied, ;(d) the substrate coated according to the preceding steps (a), (b) and (c) is heated, and finally ;(e) at least one protective varnish layer is applied. ;The corrodible optical layer is a metallic layer and/or the whole method is carried out at temperatures below 120 C.
