A variable magnification lens performs a magnification change by changing a distance between a first lens unit G1 having a positive refracting power and a second lens unit G2 having a negative refracting power, which are arranged in this order from the object side. The first lens unit G1 includes, in order from the object side, a sub-unit 1a, an aperture stop S, and a sub-unit 1b. All lens elements constituting the first lens unit G1 are arranged with intervening air spaces between one another.
