Several enhancements are provided for use with bi-directionally predictive (B) images in a video sequence. In certain enhancements, Direct Mode coding and / or Motion Vector Prediction is improved using spatial prediction techniques. In other enhancements, Motion Vector prediction includes time distance and subblock information, for example, for more accurate prediction. Such improvements and more presented herein significantly improve the performance of any applicable video coding system / logic.
