A pharmaceutical composition for treating or preventing premature rapture of the fetal membranes, ripening of the uterine cervix and preterm labor of female mammals including human is disclosed, wherein the pharmaceutical composition comprises a therapeutically effective amount of N-acety cysteine and a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier. The pharmaceutical composition may further comprise an anticytokine antibody or a cytokine carrier, progesterone a progesterone receptor agonist and an estrogen receptor antagonist, a nitrovasodilator, a prostaglandin receptor antagonist, oxyticinase and an oxytocin receptor antagonist.
