An aqueous iodine solution is reacted with a higher alkyl benzyl dimethyl ammonium halide. - A method for preparing antiseptic compounds for use in human or veterinary medicine comprises reacting an aqueous iodine solution with an alkyl benzyl dimethyl ammonium halide having an 8-18C alkyl group and a non-toxic halide ion, and then isolating the resulting alkyl benzyl dimethyl ammonium iodide compound of formula (I). - n = 8-18; and - X = non-toxic halide ion.
