The coolant channel extends from a lower level (24) in the cartridge (10) to an intermediate level (30) below the upper level (26). At least one flow diverting device is used to guide the flow of coolant as it exits the channel at the intermediate level, diverting it towards the fuel rods (14). A nuclear fuel cartridge intended for vertical mounting inside a BWR reactor comprises a number of fuel rods, at least some of which extend between upper and lower levels in the top and bottom cartridge regions. At least one device forms an essentially vertical channel for non-boiling coolant to flow through the cartridge in an upwards direction. The channel extends from the lower level to an intermediate level below the upper level. At least one flow diverting device is used to guide the flow of coolant as it exits the channel at the intermediate level, diverting it towards the fuel rods.
