SERTOLI CELLS AS TRANSPLANTATION FACILITATOR FOR CELL TRANSPLANTATION

The transplantation of Sertoli cells, particularly with a view to the treatment of neurological disorders such as Huntingdon's, Parkinson's and Alzheimer's diseases, is described. In a rat model, methods for the preparation of Sertoli-cell enriched fractions and the transplantation of these cells into the brain in the striatum ipsilateral to the substantia nigra are disclosed. In addition, the Sertoli cells are also co-transplanted with neural cells or adrenal chromaffin cells. Sertoli cells were tagged with latex beads or fluorescent dyes which enabled their histological localisation. It is considered that growth factors and immunosuppressive factors derived from Sertoli cells facilitate allograft acceptance.
