A component is built up of a number of layers (2) that are mounted on a base plate (1). The layers have cavities (3), which are filled with a material that can be hardened by freezing or polymerization to provide a join between the layers. The cavities are of various shapes to suit the outer contours and can include deformed projections to give improved grip. An Independent claim is also included for joining a laminated component by filling interior cavities with a liquid material and solidifying it by freezing or polymerization. The filling material has a lower melting point than the laminate material and can change volume on freezing. The build-up of successive shaped layers can include mechanical machining and the use of screws.
