Method for determining the thickness distribution of a layer of paint during paint spraying in which a mathematical phenomenon-based model of a quasi 3-D spray image is created. A function module (12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22), which is dependent on the movement data of the paint spraying device, is created based on the phenomenon model.
