The machine tool has a tool carrying platform (11) which can be moved along a drive spindle (12) parallel to the workpiece carrying platform (21), which moves along a workpiece drive spindle (22). Both units are arranged on top of a base (3). The spindles (12, 22) are moved simultaneously in opposite directions, resulting in an increased relative speed created between workpiece and tool.
