Method for aiding in the diagnosis and treatment of illness related changes in the blood vessels of a patient (3) has the followings steps: recording of a pixel or voxel-based image of the vessel of interest at a first time point; determination of the quantity of calcified and non-calcified plaque; determination of an indicator value based on the different plaque types; comparison of the indicator with reference values stored in memory; and, based on the comparison, output of a measure to be taken. Changes can also be monitored over time.
