A process for the recovery of hydrocarbons from mineral-containing starting materials comprises preheating of the starting material followed by further heating by addition of treated starting material with liberation of volatile combustible components. A process for the recovery of hydrocarbons from mineral-containing starting materials by preheating of the starting material followed by further heating comprises: (a) addition of the starting material to a first zone (1a) of a flowing stream heat exchanger (1); (b) heating of the starting material to a first temperature; (c) addition of the preheated material to a reaction chamber (2); (d) addition of material already heated to a second higher temperature and freed of the volatile combustible components from a second region (1b) of the heat exchanger to the reaction chamber such that a mixed temperature is arranged at which the hydrocarbons are liberated from the preheated materials; (e) removal of the liberated hydrocarbons for further use; (f) removal of the material from the reaction chamber (2) and feeding of the material to the second region of the heat exchanger (1b); (g) heating of the material freed from hydrocarbons in the second region of the heat exchanger to the second temperature and; (h) recycle of a portion of the material heated to the second temperature to the reaction chamber and removal of the remaining material for further use. An Independent claim is also included for equipment for carrying out the process comprising a heat exchanger (1) and fluidized bed reactor (2).
