Method for controlling a combustion engine using an engine controller that includes a control unit with a dynamic structure that receives signals relating to engine state and load requirements. The control unit has a computer model that is matched to the engine type and simulates a high pressure process in which energy supplied by fuel air mixture is considered, a total combustion curve (QSB) determined and with the aid of it a heat output curve (QSH) determined according to a Vibe function, from which the pressure curve is determined.
